when I go into stealth mode I can't place any objects at a chest (for example a sign, a hopper, etc.)

whenever i try to go into stealth mode i can't place items attached to other openable items.  For example the till, I can't place a sign on it because instead of putting the sign on it, it opens the till for me.  I only have this problem on servers and not in offline worlds.  what can i do to fix it?  help me please
