My villagers disappeared

My friend messages me telling me there are no villagers in our trading hall. I log on to check it out, and they've all disappeared. There was no way they could have escaped, and if they did, they would be fenced in anyways. They couldn't have died to a zombue, because we play on hard mode. We spent hours working on this, then they disappear. so Im a bit angry. please fix this.
