Bedrock multiplayer not working

I am trying to play with my friend via Bedrock multiplayer. When we both set up the world we have the ability to turn multiplayer game setting on by the multiplayer tab. However when we both go into our games we hit the multiplayer tab on settings again but the ability to have multiplayer game is blanked out and we aren't able to turn multiplayer on. Because of this we are unable to join each other.
